About Second Stage

39 Years of Second Stage Theater

In 1979, Second Stage launched with the mission of producing “second stagings” of contemporary American plays that deserved to reach a wider audience.  The idea took flight, and our dedication to telling essential American stories in their most exciting forms quickly expanded to include genre-bending solo performances, cutting-edge theatrical events, explosive new musicals, and world premieres by America’s most esteemed playwrights. Second Stage became a home for provocative, unexpected theater, with a reputation for discovering the best new talent. In our 38 years, we’ve received 180 award nominations, produced three Pulitzer Prize-winning plays, and transferred nine of our productions to Broadway.
